The auto-subtitles worked very well during the film, when the Ivan Kriekovic talking corpse scene came up. I received the blu-ray a couple of days ago, and showed the film last night to a couple of friends. Ron Perlman really captured his character. The dark tone and angle del Toro picked was spot on. Of the three Hellboy movies made this is hands down THE best one. Hellboy follows them and ends up throwing rocks at Myers head while he tries to talk with Liz. When she shows up he tries to unsuccessfully hide what he’d done, and she ends up going out with agent John Myers. At one point he covers his room in notes he tried to write to her to explain his feelings. Ron Perlman got to show the sensitive side of his character through his frustrated love affair with Liz Sherman. They also lay out an alternative history of World War II where Hitler continued to fight using magic past 1945, which was what led to the creation of the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense.įinally, everything wasn’t all serious either. Rasputin also brings forth a beast named Samael who each time is killed comes back as two more. Rasputin is like a sorcerer, Haupstein is his assistant and Kroenen was a masochist who couldn't stop doing surgery on himself. Grigori Rasputin, his lover Ilsa von Haupstein and henchman Karl Ruprecht Kroenen are a great trio of villains.

The question was what would be a more powerful force in Hellboy’s future, his origins in an alien universe or his time on Earth? That will be tested in the climax of the story.ĭel Toro did a great job making the movie focus upon the occult. Hellboy comes from Ogdru Jahad’s evil world, but he will be raised as Trevor Bruttenholm and eventually becomes part of the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense whose job it was to protect the Earth from beasts. An American force advised by Trevor Bruttenholm stops them, but not before a door to Ogdru Jahad’s dimension is opened and Hellboy who was a child at the time comes to Earth. It employed Grigori Rasputin to try to bring forth Ogdru Jahad a monster from another dimension to help Hitler. During World War II the Nazis were attempting to use the occult to further its quest for world domination. The film begins with the origins of Hellboy which sets up the theme of the story. He was born in a world of evil, but did that make him evil or did his upbringing make him the hero people expected him to be? The story was more than just a tale of good and evil, it was about the soul of Hellboy. The movie had the perfect mix of director Guillermo del Toro and Ron Perlman as the big guy.
